Canada Day

Trafalgar Square was turned in white and red yesterday, as it was the main location selected in London to celebrate Canada Day - as I shortly found out is the anniversary of the Constitution act of 1867 when the British North American colonies where united into one country.

As we're determined to enjoy as many new experiences as possible, especially if those experiences involve food and drink, we had to go and also check the organisation of the Dine Mile High, one of the newest pop-up experiences in London that, of course, had to be involved in Canada Day while they set up the following flight destination.

It was the perfect setting for an al fresco dinner in a tent in the North Terrace of the Square, overlooking to the action of the stage, and the Big Ben in the background. I never thought I would be having dinner here, although actually we were close not to having it as they had mixed up our reservation - long story that I'm not going to disclose today.

The staff looked a bit flustered trying to get everyone placed according to their previously arranged sitting plan, so we didn't push it too hard and soon enough we were squeezed in a table ready to enjoy our dinner (and the Big Ben in the background!).
Among the organisers of Dine Mile High there is a good young chef, and I actually can say that the food was very good. Grilled lobster as a starter, pork belly as a main and a delicious bourbon ice cream with maple syrup. How much of this menu is originally Canadian? I can't really tell. But it was good.
There were, however, some issues with the drinks, as other than small bottles of water, there was nothing else available. I would have thought that, for the price of the dinner, at least 1 glass of wine was included. But there was nothing, so we decided to go outside to one of the bars and bring some cans of beer.

The evening was really unique as dining in Trafalgar Square with the Big Ben in the background (yes, I know, I'm being repetitive but you have to adore the building) is quite an experience. Also the food was good, we managed our fair amount of Canadian beer, and there was live music in the background. Nonetheless, it was over quite soon as there was another serving so we had to vacate our table.
I think we may give them another chance...
